The traditional dog collar, or standard dog collar, will do the job perfectly if all you want is a dog collar that simply allows you to attach a dog leash, the all important dog tag, and doesn't cost too much! Though the traditional dog collar, or standard collar, comes in different designs and textures (nylon, cotton or leather), the majority allow you to attach a leash and identity tag. However, you do need to make sure that the collar is strong enough to keep your dog under control, is suitable for the dog’s build, and also fits correctly!

The traditional dog collar made of nylon, is a good, inexpensive, choice for puppies and adult dogs. Nylon collars are comfortable and are available in a variety of great styles. There is an extensive range of colours and patterns to choose from. Nylon dog collars are also very durable and machine washable. They are also good collars for dogs that spend a lot of time in the water, and the softer versions are ideal for puppies and smaller dogs.

Leather collars are hardwearing and long lasting, and their appearance can actually improve with age! A traditional dog collar made of leather, looks good anyway, and the rolled type looks even better. Rolled leather collars are not only more comfortable, they also avoid the chafing or hair breakage that flat collars sometimes cause. A rolled leather collar is more suited to long haired dogs and will stop their hair lying flat around their neck region. Oils from their dog's skin can soften the leather and make it more supple, but don’t forget to remove leather collars when you’re bathing your dog or when it's swimming. Leather can quickly become moldy if it gets wet, and this greatly reduces a collars life span. Leather collars come in many different colours, styles and widths, with thin leather collars being most suitable for puppies and smaller dogs.

Whatever style you choose, standard or traditional collars need to be fully adjustable for growing dogs. Buckle Collars offer a good solution, as the buckle allows the collar to be adjusted for a comfortable fit, and the collar does not tighten on the dog's neck once it is fastened. They are typically made of nylon, cotton, or leather, and are either flat or rolled. Quick-Release Collars are also adjustable, and do not tighten once fastened. They are basically flat nylon collars with a plastic connection that makes getting the collar on and off easier and quicker. One final comment, if you think your dog's behaviour could do with some improvement then before buying the traditional dog collar why not investigate training and/or electronic dog collars first.
